Greenway Biotech Feather Meal 12-0-0 is ground, hydrolyzed poultry feathers. It supplies 12% nitrogen, all of it in protein form, and no phosphate or potash. Soil microbes turn the protein into ammonium and nitrate. In university lab tests in warm, moist soil, about half of feather meal’s nitrogen became available within two weeks and about 60% within four, so it is not a months-long slow-release fertilizer.
Apply it by weight to match a nitrogen target. Washington State University’s vegetable garden rate works out to 2.2 to 2.8 lb of feather meal per 100 sq ft for the season, worked into the soil at planting and kept out of the seed row. On lawns, University of California IPM’s 0.5 to 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per application is 4.2 to 8.3 lb. It also suits fruit trees, landscape plantings, and farm fields at university nitrogen rates.
